Law 115 of 1994

The General Education Act provides that the State shall promote the training of educators in the mastery of the cultures and languages of ethnic groups, as well as social programmes to disseminate them. To this end, it states that, in consultation with the ethnic groups, educators working in their territories will be selected, preferably from among the members of the communities living there. These educators must accredit training in ethno-education, possess basic knowledge of the respective ethnic group, especially their mother tongue, in addition to Spanish. It also states that the recruitment, administration and training of teachers for ethnic groups shall be carried out in accordance with the Teachers’ Statute and the special regulations in force applicable to such groups.
